about
"Calling Alameda" is the follow-up to "Tumble", the first all-new original WORDS collaboration since 1998. The band's 2nd new single of 2012 incorporates trademark WORDS elements of melody, lush harmonies, and an infectious, sunshiny bounce.
Note: The original inspiration behind "Calling Alameda" was Davy Jones' contribution to The Monkees' "Zilch" (1967). "Alameda" was written and partially recorded just days before Davy's untimely passing this past February.
WORDS would like to dedicate this single to the memory of David T. Jones, a man whose music has influenced our own since day one.
lyrics
LYRICS:
V1
Whoever thought, whoever dreamed
We'd ever see a boat with wings?
November 1935
Alameda.
V2
China Clipper first of three
Martin M-140
Bringing airmail to the islands
From Alameda...oh Alameda.
chorus:
Calling Alameda
Land of Poplar trees
Calling Alameda
Hope & prosperity
Calling Alameda
Thirty feet above the sea.
V3
China Clippers two and three
Tragically both lost at sea
Number one last to survive
'Till '45.
repeat chorus
bridge:
China Clipper number one
Crashed in 1945
The first was the last to survive
1945.
